There was never any doubt, but Disney has officially confirmed Marvel Studios will be part of this summer’s D23 Expo in Anaheim, CA. Marvel Studios will be among the Disney silos sharing new details from their upcoming slate during the Walt Disney Studios panel, taking place on Saturday, August 24.
Disney has revamped how it does panels for movies this year. Previously, there have been separate panels for animation and live-action, with Marvel Studios taking part in the latter. In 2019, there will be a single Walt Disney Studios panel covering all of Disney’s movies (Marvel, Lucasfilm, Pixar, Disney Animation, Disney live-action).
There was no mention of Fox films for the panel.
The consolidation of movie panels was likely done to make room for the Disney+ presentation, set for Friday, August 23 (the animation panel used to be on Friday at the Expo). Marvel Studios has been not named as a participant in the Disney+ panel yet, but with a few series already confirmed for the streaming service, studio boss Kevin Feige and a few stars may show up.
At this point, it is hard to know exactly what Marvel Studios will bring to D23 Expo for the Walt Disney Studios panel. Black Widow is the only project currently in production and nothing else, as far we know, is scheduled to start before the Expo. Marvel will probably bring some Black Widow footage, but what else could the studio reveal?
Marvel Studios is not confirmed but is expected to appear in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con in July. The studio is expected to announce at least some of its post-2019 movie slate there, but it would make sense for Marvel to hold a few announcements back for D23 Expo.
I don’t expect Kevin Feige to announce the next five years’ worth of Marvel movies, as he did in October 2014 at El Capitan Theatre. Over the course of the summer, we will probably learn Marvel’s slate through 2022, or 2023 at the most. Feige could announce the 2020-2021 crop of films at SDCC while saving the rest for D23.
Even if Comic-Con gets all the movie title announcements, D23 Expo could get casting news with stars walking out on the Hall D23 stage. If Marvel Studios skips the Disney+ panel but has new details to share, Feige could drop those during the movie panel.
Aside from announcements and exclusive Black Widow footage, Marvel Studios could unveil exclusive concept art from its upcoming films and/or Disney+ shows. At D23 Expo 2015, Marvel revealed previously-unreleased concept art from Doctor Strange, which was still a few months shy of production.
We could see something similar in 2019 for The Eternals, which is in pre-production now and will start shooting soon after the Expo. Perhaps Feige will be generous with concept art from other expected movies like Shang-Chi, Black Panther 2, Doctor Strange 2, or the Disney+ series WandaVision, Loki, or Falcon and Winter Soldier.
If you are hoping to attend the Walt Disney Studios panel, then you will need to have already secured your three-day or Saturday passes, as those are sold out. Friday and Sunday passes are still available. Marvel Studios will have a presence on Friday, August 23, with Robert Downey Jr. and Jon Favreau being honored during the Disney Legends Awards Ceremony.
The Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products panel on Sunday, August 25, could also feature Marvel announcements. We know Marvel is going to have an expanded presence in Disney Parks in the near future, so new details on that are likely to emerge during Sunday’s top presentation.
