Marvel Studios has tapped a one-time King in the North to play a role in the next era of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Wrap reports that Richard Madden is in talks to join The Eternals.
The Wrap did not immediately have details on Madden’s role, but The Hollywood Reporter and Variety have reported that he will play Ikaris. The character is a leader among the Eternals in Marvel Comics, though we do not yet know if he will have the same status in the film.
The fictional history of the Eternals, as originally created by Jack Kirby, goes back millions of years. The Celestials came to Earth and experimented on Proto-Humans, creating the Eternals who are, obviously, immortal and also have a variety of super powers.
The Eternals have lived among humans throughout our entire history, giving Marvel Studios no shortage of time periods in which this story can be set. The Celestials also created the Deviants, a mortal species of villains that may or may not appear in the first film.
Madden rose to fame as Robb Stark in Game of Thrones. He also had starring turns in Disney’s live-action Cinderella and Netflix’s Bodyguard. Madden will next appear in the Elton John biopic, Rocket Man, in theaters this month.
Madden is the latest reported addition to an increasingly-impressive cast for director Chloé Zhao. Angelina Jolie (possibly as Sersi), Kumail Nanjiani, and Ma Dong-seok have all reportedly been in talks for the film.
Marvel Studios has yet to confirm any cast members or a release date for The Eternals. We expect the film to drop on November 6, 2020, with Marvel making the date and casting news official as early as San Diego Comic-Con this July.
