James Gunn has been reinstated as the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Deadline reports the news after confirming it with Disney/Marvel and Gunn’s representatives.
Gunn was fired last July after offensive tweets from the director’s past resurfaced. Disney upheld the decision weeks later despite the cast publicly supporting Gunn’s reinstatement.
Warner Bros. wasn’t worried about Gunn’s old tweets and quickly signed filmmaker to write and direct The Suicide Squad. That is still happening and Gunn will resume work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after he delivers The Suicide Squad.
Gunn’s DC movie goes into production later this year, well ahead of its August 2021 release. It’s possible Gunn could resume work on GotG Vol. 3 later next year. While there is a path to GotG Vol. 3 being released in 2021 (the script is already written), a 2022 release seems more likely.
Marvel Studios has open release dates on February 18, May 6, and July 29 in 2022.
This is fantastic news for Marvel Studios, James Gunn, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. It’s good to see cooler heads finally prevailed.
