On today’s first quarter earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Iger reiterated Disney’s interest in Deadpool as an R-rated franchise. Iger has been saying as much since the Disney-Fox deal was announced in December 2019. Today, Iger says that interest could expand beyond the Merc with a Mouth.

Iger also reiterated that all R-rated Marvel movies, should Disney actually bring any to market, will be branded accordingly. Audiences are going to know what to expect so that parents know which Marvel movies are not appropriate for their kids.

There have been rumors that Marvel Studios is developing Black Widow as an R-rated film, but that would be a big surprise. Despite Iger’s declaration of interest in R-rated Marvel movies, there is a big difference between a franchise that has been rated R from the start and the first solo movie with a character that’s been in the PG-13 space for nearly a decade.

Hopefully, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige will talk more about the prospect of R-rated Marvel movies in the months to come. Avengers: Endgame is less than three months away, so we should be close to Feige finally discussing Marvel Studios’ future much more openly.
