Captain Marvel is going to be another major hit for Marvel Studios. Tickets went on sale Monday afternoon and the film’s first 24 hours of Fandango presales were third-best in the history of the studio. Captain Marvel‘s first-day presales have only been topped by Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War.
This is an incredible start of Captain Marvel. Fandango has not shared how far behind Captain Marvel is compared to the two Marvel films ahead of it, but Black Panther and Infinity War each opened over $200M domestically.
That is not to say Captain Marvel should expect the same kind of start. Ant-Man and the Wasp had the fifth-best first 24 hours in Fandango presales for Marvel Studios, but its $75.8M domestic opening weekend ranks sixteenth out of the studio’s twenty films.

Captain America: Civil War owns Marvel Studios’ fourth-best first day on Fandango and that led to a domestic opening of $179.1M. Captain Marvel could conceivably end up in that range, but we should avoid making such bold predictions until we see box office tracking closer to the film’s release.
Each of Marvel Studios’ last four releases is in the studio’s top five all-time in this metric. Some of that can be credited to Marvel’s ever-increasing popularity. Given the solid but unspectacular opening of Ant-Man and the Wasp, however, it’s also clear that a higher percentage of moviegoers are booking their tickets in advance through Fandango and other retailers.
Captain Marvel should be able to top Ant-Man and the Wasp‘s opening weekend. I like its chances of topping $100M in its first three days in North America. As the movie gets closer, we’ll see how far the movie can go beyond that massive milestone.
