Black Panther continues its streak of nominations across the major guilds with a pair of nominations from the WGA and Art Directors Guild today. The Oscar® momentum for Marvel Studios’ pop culture phenomenon continues to grow.
Ryan Coogler and Joe Robert Cole have been nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay by the Writers Guild of America for their Black Panther script. This is a rare accomplishment for movies based on comic book superheroes.
The Art Directors Guild nominated Black Panther production designer Hannah Beachler for Best Production Design in a Fantasy Film. The Art Directors Guild separates films across various categories including Fantasy, Period, Contemporary, and Animated.
Black Panther has been a favorite of the various guilds throughout this awards season. It has previously been nominated for Best Ensemble by the Screen Actors Guild and Best Picture by the Producers Guild of America.
The guilds are made up of huge blocks of Academy voters, so Black Panther‘s Oscar® chances are getting better and better. The Hollywood Foreign Press does not vote on the Oscars®, so Black Panther not winning in any of the three categories for which it was nominated at last night’s Golden Globes should not be a concern.
The Directors Guild of America will announce its nominees tomorrow. Black Panther does not need a nomination there in order to secure a Best Picture nom from the Academy, but it wouldn’t hurt. More importantly, it would be great to see Ryan Coogler get the recognition he deserves.
