Sony Pictures is still keeping the Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer offline, but fans at Comic Con Experience Brazil saw it (or at least a trailer) a couple weeks ago. Among the surprising sites in the footage that was shown was Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) working with Spider-Man (Tom Holland).
Mysterio is a classic Spider-Man villain, so it’s been expected that Gyllenhaal and Holland would be battling in Far From Home. An alliance between the two defies all of our automatic assumptions, or does it?
“Well, there are these threats to the world, the Elementals,” Gyllenhaal explained to Omelete at CCXP (via Collider). “Elemental creatures, Mysterio is someone who knows about them and who wants to make sure that the world is safe from them, and Nick Fury asks him to come on and help because he’s the only one who really understands them in a way. And he teams up with the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man and unfortunately, he has to make him become more than just a Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.”
Gyllenhaal could make the least surprising villain turn of all time in Far From Home. It’s easy enough to guess that Mysterio is only an expert on the Elementals because he’s the one behind them. They could be actual people/creatures he’s hired or illusions he’s fabricated.
I have a hard time imagining Spider-Man and Mysterio never facing off in Far From Home. It’s going to happen and the only thing I really wonder is how Marvel is supposed to make Mysterio’s turn emotionally impactful.
