Adam McKay already has his name etched in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He co-wrote Ant-Man after Edgar Wright left the project in 2014. McKay passed on the director’s chair for that film, but it’s only a matter of time before he directs a Marvel Studios movie. McKay already knows exactly which one he wants.

“Silver Surfer is the one I wanna do,” McKay told Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “I would do anything to do Silver Surfer because visually that would just be like you could do what the Wachowskis did with Speed Racer with the Silver Surfer. At the same time, there’s a great emotional story in there where the guy has to make the choice, Norrin Radd has to save his planet. That would be the one, but I think Fox owns the rights.”

McKay perked up when Horowitz let him know Silver Surfer would soon be home at Marvel Studios when Disney’s Fox acquisition closes. “I’ll call Kevin Feige,” McKay said. “I think you’ve just created the Silver Surfer movie”

The Vice writer-director also mentioned Nova as a character he enjoyed as a kid and that he thinks Marvel Studios is “kicking around a Nova idea.” That checks out. Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, has previously stated that Nova has “immediate potential” in the MCU.

When asked if he’d been contacted by Marvel about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, McKay acknowledged that he had been, but then steered away from that specific subject. “We’ve talked a little bit,” he said about GOTG Vol. 3. “We were [also] kicking around the idea of Inhumans at one point. No, we’re always kind of talking. I think Feige’s just the greatest and I think what they’re doing over there is amazing.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 remains on hold indefinitely. Marvel Studios is still searching for a director after James Gunn was fired by Disney last July. McKay, who didn’t want to direct Ant-Man because “it felt a little weird to step in [his friend, Edgar Wright’s] shoes” probably wouldn’t want to fill in for Gunn either, especially when there are other projects McKay can build from the ground up.

McKay sounds eager to work with Marvel again, and perhaps next time as a director. “I really enjoyed working with Feige,” he said. “I mean, there’s a reason that thing is clicking. That guy has good taste. We wrote this section where Ant-Man fights one of the Avengers and I was like, ‘Kevin, I wrote this crazy thing. You probably won’t wanna do it.’ And he was like, ‘Well, let me read it.’ And he read it and was like ‘That’s awesome! We’re doing it!’ He just had that sense about him and yeah, what a fun world over there. I would definitely go back there and work. [Ant-Man] was a career highlight.

Hopefully, McKay really made (or will make) that call to Feige about Silver Surfer. There’s no rule that says the Surfer has to be introduced in a Fantastic Four story first, as he was in the comics. The story of Norrin Radd becoming a Herald of Galactus is powerful enough to stand on its own, especially with a talented writer-director like McKay getting behind it with genuine passion.
