Black Panther picked up a pair of nominations for the Screen Actors Guild Awards this morning. The film was nominated for Oustanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture and Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture.
The Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture nomination is huge. Black Panther is the first Marvel Studios film and only super-based movie to be nominated in this category, making this a critical step in the Oscar® race.
Actors represent the largest branch of Academy voters. If they had not recognized Black Panther‘s ensemble cast, the film would have faced an uphill battle in the quest for a Best Picture Oscar® nomination. Fortunately, SAG has recognized the Black Panther cast and that support gives the film the best chance any superhero-based movie has ever had at the Best Picture Oscar®.
Remember that The Dark Knight, the last superhero-based film that had a real shot at a Best Picture nomination, was not nominated for best ensemble performance by the SAG Awards. The same goes for other superhero-based movies that some believed had Best Picture prospects, like Deadpool and Wonder Woman.
The 25th Annual SAG Awards will be held on January 27, 2019. Should Black Panther‘s ensemble (listed below) win that night, we could see a Best Picture victory at the Academy Awards.
- Angela Bassett / Ramonda
- Chadwick Boseman / T’Challa/Black Panther
- Sterling K. Brown / N’Jobu
- Winston Duke / M’Baku
- Martin Freeman / Everett K. Ross
- Dania Gurira / Okoye
- Michael B. Jordan / Erik Killmonger
- Daniel Kaluuya / W’Kabi
- Lupita Nyong’o / Nakia
- Andy Serkis / Ulysses Klaue
- Forest Whitaker / Zuri
- Letitia Wright / Shuri
Avengers: Infinity War and Ant-Man and the Wasp were also nominated in the Stunt Ensemble category, giving Marvel Studios four nominations for this year’s SAG Awards.
