Daredevil has been canceled after three seasons. Netflix officially announced the series will not return for a fourth season. This comes on the heels of previous cancellations for Iron Fist and Luke Cage. The partnership between Marvel and Netflix is coming to an end.

Netflix confirmed the Daredevil cancellation with an official statement to Deadline.

“Marvel’s Daredevil will not return for a fourth season on Netflix. We are tremendously proud of the show’s last and final season and although it’s painful for the fans, we feel it best to close this chapter on a high note.

“We’re thankful to showrunner Erik Oleson, the show’s writers, stellar crew and incredible cast including Charlie Cox as Daredevil himself, and we’re grateful to the fans who have supported the show over the years. While the series on Netflix has ended, the three existing seasons will remain on the service for years to come, while the Daredevil character will live on in future projects for Marvel.”

Daredevil season three was outstanding, but quality creative wasn’t enough to save it. Netflix has been moving away from Marvel and with Disney ready to launch its own streaming platform next year, the feeling is probably mutual.

Between Disney+ and the majority stake Disney will have in Hulu via the Fox acquisition, the end of Marvel on Netflix was easily foreseen. Marvel was already talking about not creating new series for Netflix back in January of this year.

What has accelerated this process is Netflix’s own lack of interest in trying to keep a potentially unwilling dance partner around. These are expensive shows for Netflix to make and the company has already invested heavily in other superhero properties from Rob Liefeld and Mark Millar.

Declining viewership may also be to blame here. Of course, all of that reporting comes from third parties as Netflix does not publish their viewership numbers. Regardless, Netflix has clearly reached the conclusion that Marvel just isn’t worth the expense.

In all likelihood, we will only see two more seasons of Marvel Television on Netflix. The second season of The Punisher has already been filmed and Jessica Jones season three has been in production for several months. It may have already wrapped. Both shows will probably arrive on Netflix in 2019 and that will be it.
