Marvel Studios’ 2020 slate is becoming one of the worst kept secrets in Hollywood. Studio boss Kevin Feige is holding back official announcements for as long as he can, but films have to move forward and news breaks. Today we have an update on when The Eternals will start production.
Aside from films that are already in postproduction, only two Marvel Studios projects have directors attached. Cate Shortland was hired to direct Black Widow several months ago, followed Chloé Zhao to helm The Eternals. It’s easy enough to figure out that Black Widow will be Marvel’s May 1, 2020 movie and The Eternals will drop November 6, 2020. Everything I’ve heard indicates that natural assumption is correct.
This sets Black Widow up for a spring or early summer production start next year. Cameras will need to roll on The Eternals late next year and That Hashtag Show reports production will commence in September, give or take a few weeks.
A September (or later) production start means Marvel Studios can keep enough of a lid on the film to delay announcements until Comic-Con or D23 Expo next summer. That does not mean, however, that The Eternals will not get scooped once Marvel starts filling out the cast. Fans will just have to meet them officially in Hall H or in the D23 arena.
