Captain America’s best friends are getting a show together! Variety reports that Marvel Studios is developing a Falcon and Winter Soldier limited series for the Disney streaming service. Empire‘s Malcolm Spellman will write the series, which may very well end up being the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s answer to The Odd Couple.
As you know, Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) don’t exactly get along. This should fuel a lot of laughs, but perhaps a stronger friendship (independent of Steve Rogers) as well.
Marvel Studios and Disney did not comment on the story. Marvel doesn’t want to say anything about their post-Avengers 4 plans, but this news has to make you feel good about the survival odds for Sam and Bucky.
Sam was secret avenging with Cap (Chris Evans) between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. Bucky presumably spent most of that time on ice in Wakanda, so this series likely takes place after Avengers 4. That means Sam and Bucky are gonna make it out of The Avengers’ next tussle with Thanos alive. Their mutual best friend, however, may not be so lucky.
There have also been rumors of Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) getting his own or being a significant part of a limited series. If there is any truth to those rumors, it wouldn’t surprise me if Fury is actually part of this Falcon/Winter Soldier show. It makes sense given the military background of both Sam and Bucky.
Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) are reportedly set to have their own limited series as well. These limited series, which are produced by Marvel Studios instead of Marvel Television, will range from six to eight episodes with budgets much higher than a normal television series.
We do not know which, if any of these series, will be available when the Disney streaming service launches late next year.
