The sequel to 2016’s Doctor Strange may be further along than we thought. Benedict Wong was at a panel at Fan Expo Vancouver this weekend and, according to attendees, the actor hinted that filming on Doctor Strange 2 could begin as early as this December.
Wong also confirmed that he’ll return for Avengers 4, but we already knew that from his Instagram feed.
No one has shared a direct quote and, as of this writing, there’s no video from the panel. It’s probably best to take this with a grain of salt for now, but if a Doctor Strange sequel script has been completed, it is possible that filming could start this year or early 2019.

If Doctor Strange 2 really starts production that soon, it effectively guarantees that the film will take the May 1, 2020 release date that was intended for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is on hold indefinitely.
There has been no official word on whether Scott Derrickson will return to helm the sequel. If production begins this year, however, then I’d presume he’ll be back. We probably would have heard about a director change, as we already know who’s directing Black Widow and The Eternals, two other films likely to be released in 2020.
If Doctor Strange 2 does not start production in the first half of 2019, then it’s likely Black Widow and The Eternals could be ahead of it in line.
