Marvel Studios has found a director for The Eternals! The Hollywood Reporter reports that Chloé Zhao (The Rider) will helm the first film in what the studio hopes will be a major post-Avengers 4 franchise. Zhao will direct based on a script from Matthew and Ryan Firpo.
The Eternals are a Jack Kirby creation. They are a species of superhumans created by gigantic, cosmically ancient beings called Celestials. They have been walking the Earth all along, as the Eternals and another species known as the Deviants were born as humanity began.
Marvel Studios and Disney had no comment on THR‘s story, nor will they, as all future Marvel movie announcements are being held until after Avengers 4. Zhao, who was previously a contender for the Black Widow directing gig, beat out a strong list of contenders including Watchmen pilot director Nicole Kassell and Travis Knight (Bumblebee).
The story of The Eternals reportedly features a romance between Ikaris and Sersi. The former is a prominent leader among the Eternals while the latter is arguably the most popular. Sersi has served as an Avenger in the comics and her love for mixing it up with humans at parties and other lavish social occasions will make her a fun addition to the MCU.
