Entertainment Weekly just dropped the first official images from Captain Marvel! Enjoy your first look at Captain Marvel, Skrulls, Ronan, and a younger Nick Fury in the gallery below!
There were also some important details that came with the images. We had just learned about the presence of Starforce in the film and speculated about the roster, but now we can see it. Jude Law (as Mar-Vell?) will command a team featuring Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), Ronan (Lee Pace), Minn-Erva (Gemma Chan), Att-Lass (Algenis Perez Soto), and Bron-Char (Rune Temte).
Law’s character will, of course, mentor Danvers. “These extraordinary powers she has, he sees them as something of a blessing and something that she has to learn how to control,” Law tells EW. “That’s a motif throughout the piece, the element of learning to control one’s emotions and to use your powers wisely.”
This version of Talos can shape-shift. Ben Mendelsohn’s villainous character will have the famous Skrull ability that Talos lacks in the comics. He will take human form to work with S.H.I.E.L.D. It was bad enough S.H.I.E.L.D. was infiltrated by Hydra, but now we know the Skrulls duped them, too!
We already learned from spy photos that Carol Danvers likes to rock, but now we officially see it via her Nine Inch Nails shirt. There will be plenty more 1990s references throughout the film.
Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) is described as a “lowly desk jockey.” He’s nowhere near his eventual director status and will be meeting his first superhero in this film.
Lashana Lynch is playing Maria Rambeau, one of Carol’s closest friends and a fellow Air Force pilot. Rambeau has a young daughter who was not named in the EW article, but you can bet the girl’s name is Monica. Maria’s call sign is “Photon” one of the superhero names of Monica Rambeau in the comics.
As we know, Captain Marvel is set in the 1990s. Carol Danvers will soon be flying around and punching evildoers like Thanos in the modern-day MCU, starting with Avengers 4. By that time, Monica Rambeau will be all grown up and ready to join Danvers on superhero adventures in an eventual Captain Marvel sequel! Monica Rambeau, who’s actually been Captain Marvel in the comics, will probably use her Photon identity in the MCU to honor her mother unless Marvel Studios prefers Monica’s other superhero identity, Spectrum.
Captain Marvel is in theaters March 8, 2019.
