A few years ago, Taika Waitit signed on to direct Thor: Ragnarok because, as he put it, he saw “a friend in need.” That friend was Chris Hemsworth who was looking for a way to reinvigorate the Thor franchise. Waititi recently met with another friend in need, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, perhaps to discuss the director’s next project with the studio.

The Hollywood Reporter was informed of the meeting by a source, though no one knows what project was discussed. Immediate speculation will point to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Marvel Studios is actively searching for a director to replace James Gunn and Waititi has been a popular fan choice from the moment Gunn was fired last month.

Waititi has expressed interest in helming another Marvel movie, but he’s mentioned a fourth Thor film (or really Thor: Ragnarok 2) as his preferred project. No one outside of Marvel Studios knows if his interest stretches to the Guardians of the Galaxy. Waititi could have the best of both worlds, though, if Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Thor 4 are mashed up.

Marvel Studios is developing other projects besides Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, so it’s perfectly possible the meeting had nothing to do with that film. If it is about GotG Vol. 3, we’ll probably know sooner than later.
