Disney is holding firm on its decision to fire director James Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Gunn met with The Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn yesterday, but the filmmaker will not return to the franchise he helped launch. According to Variety, Marvel Studios supports Disney’s final decision.
Gunn was given the courtesy of making his case and the meeting was described as “civil and professional,” but Horn did not change his mind about severing Disney’s relationship with the director. Disney does plan, however, to retain Gunn’s script for GotG Vol. 3.
The potential rehiring of Gunn was always a longshot. It’s no surprise that Disney stands by its decision. Contrary to reports that Marvel Studios was gently pushing for Gunn’s reinstatement, however, Marvel boss Kevin Feige reportedly supports the call Disney has made.
Feige was out of town and did not attend yesterday’s meeting. Once he gets back to Burbank, he and Disney will search for a new GotG Vol. 3 director. It is still unknown as to how the film’s production schedule, currently set to begin in early 2019, will be affected.
