Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has been in limbo since director James Gunn was fired last month. Chris Pratt and his castmates have called for but are not requiring Disney to reinstate him. Nothing has changed since they issued an open letter supporting Gunn and the cloud of uncertainty hanging over the franchise is difficult to endure.

“It’s not an easy time,” Pratt told the Associated Press on Tuesday. “We all love James and he’s a good friend of ours, but we also really love playing the Guardians of the Galaxy. It’s a complicated situation for everybody. And you know, we just want to move forward and do what’s right and be the best people we can be.”

There is no boycott brewing. The cast will return for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 with or without Gunn. At this point, they might just prefer to have a definitive answer on what the next steps will be for the film. Gunn could be rehired, but that is not the most likely scenario.

Once Disney and Gunn conclude negotiations over his exit, that will probably be the signal that it’s time for everyone, the cast and fans, to prepare for a new director to be chosen.
