James Gunn has been fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Disney made the call after older tweets from Gunn containing tasteless jokes about rape and pedophilia resurfaced last night.

Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn confirmed the firing in a statement.

“The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with him.”

This is shocking news, though I can understand why Disney made the move. Gunn has already turned in at least one draft of the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 script. The film was set to begin production early next year for an expected (but not officially announced May 1 release).

We will have to see how quickly Disney and Marvel Studios move to get a new director in place. They will probably want a new writer as well, in hopes of completing a new script so that Gunn’s name does not have to be attached to GotG Vol. 3 in any way.
