Social media has the power to bring people together. Corporate mergers have the power to make the combined dreams of those people a reality. Thanks to Twitter and the Disney-Fox deal, we may soon be treated to a crossover between the superhero genre’s two most irreverent franchises: Guardians of the Galaxy and Deadpool.

Guardians of the Galaxy franchise writer-director James Gunn saw Deadpool 2 this weekend and loved it enough to give the film and its star, Ryan Reynolds, a shoutout on Twitter. Reynolds graciously accepted the compliment while also suggesting a crossover. Gunn liked the idea.

Most social media exchanges like this ultimately prove meaningless. This one could as well, but a crossover between Guardians of the Galaxy and Deadpool may be possible in the foreseeable future.

If the Disney-Fox deal closes next year, Deadpool could be a late addition to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which will be in production throughout the first half of 2019. More likely, however, Deadpool would be saved for some other crossover with Guardians characters since Gunn probably won’t want to significantly change his script.

Of course, Deadpool could still pop in for a cameo or post-credits scene since GotG Vol. 3 won’t hit theaters until 2020. We just have to hope Comcast doesn’t mess up the proposed Disney-Fox deal.

Guardians of the Galaxy and Deadpool would work well together, as both franchises are known for their “anything goes” attitudes. Gunn has previously said that GotG Vol. 3 will be the final chapter for the current iteration of the Guardians, but Wade Wilson could work with any combination of whichever characters are left on (or spun off from) the team.

Is it really that hard to picture Deadpool alongside any member of the Guardians of the Galaxy? Not at all. Every potential permutation feels like a formula for hilarity.
