Kamala Khan is coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has confirmed that something is “in the works” for the character after Captain Marvel officially joins the MCU next year.

Feige shared the news with the BBC.

“We’re doing Captain Marvel right now. Captain Marvel is shooting right now with Brie Larson. Ms. Marvel, which is another character in the comics, the Muslim hero who was inspired by Captain Marvel, is definitely sort of in the works. We have plans for that once we’ve introduced Captain Marvel to the world.”

Ms. Marvel, real name Kamala Khan, emerged in the Marvel Comics universe almost five years ago. She is a teenager from a Pakistani American family in Jersey City, New Jersey. Khan, the first Muslim character to have her own Marvel comic, is the brainchild of writer G. Willow Wilson, artist Adrian Alphona, and editors Sana Amanat and Stephen Wacker.

Khan gained her “embiggening” powers, which are essentially the ability to stretch and change shape similar to Mr. Fantastic, when she was exposed to a Terrigen cloud. The Terrigen activated her Inhuman genes and the powers stored within.

There are no Inhumans in Marvel movies right now. Inhumans have been exclusive to Marvel Television, appearing on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the failed Inhumans series. Odds are Kamala Khan will get her powers a different way in the movies via something closer to how Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) acquires her abilities, or if the Fox deal closes in time, Khan could be introduced as a mutant. I’m betting on the former.

Khan is a big fan of Captain Marvel, which is why she uses the superhero name Ms. Marvel (which Danvers used to go by). Captain Marvel can’t have any fans in the MCU until she shows up, so it makes sense that Feige and company are waiting to introduce Kamala.

Once Danvers bursts onto the scene in Captain Marvel and Avengers 4 next year, Kamala Khan will quickly become one of her biggest fans. After she is introduced, expect Ms. Marvel to eventually lead her own movies and also team up with other young Avengers like Spider-Man, Shuri, and (probably) Nova.
