Avengers: Infinity War has done something no superhero movie ever has in its first day at the domestic box office. The 19th Marvel Studios film topped $100M on Friday with $106M (including $39M in Thursday night previews). That puts the film on pace for over $240M this weekend.
Deadline is actually reporting even higher numbers of $106.7M for Friday and $245.6M for the weekend.
Infinity War is one of only three films to earn over $100M in their first day. Infinity War‘s opening day comes in second place, behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($119.1M), but ahead of Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($104.7M).
Avengers: Infinity War is currently on pace for finish just behind The Force Awakens ($248M) for the second best opening weekend in domestic box office history. The estimates, however, have been adjusted upward multiple times already, so we could still see Infinity War topple TFA and set a new record.
It will just depend on how many moviegoers are rushing out to catch the film (or see it again) today and tomorrow. Infinity War received an “A” CinemaScore from audiences last night, so the word-of-mouth is definitely positive.
Regardless, Marvel Studios is assured a major victory with this opening weekend. It’s just a matter of how much bigger that victory gets today and tomorrow.
