Black Panther is the new king at the domestic box office for superhero movies. After its sixth weekend, the film has amassed $631.7M in North America, breaking the record held by The Avengers ($623.4M) since 2012.

Prior to Black Panther, Marvel’s The Avengers was the only superhero film to top $600M domestic. It was starting to feel like the ceiling for superhero cinema, but Black Panther has made it just another barrier to break through.

Wakanda will soon have another opportunity to continue its box office momentum, as the home of T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) and the Dora Milaje is featured prominently in Avengers: Infinity War, out April 27.

Congratulations to director Ryan Coogler, Marvel Studios, and the entire Black Panther team on breaking this record!
