Captain Marvel remains on the outside looking in for Avengers: Infinity War. An Entertainment Tonight interview with directors Joe and Anthony Russo provided a brief glimmer of hope, but Disney has stepped in with perhaps the final clarification and confirmation.

The Russo Brothers and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige have all said, at various times, that Captain Marvel is not slated to appear in Avengers: Infinity War. The Russos said as much to reporters during a set visit last year, though they confirmed the character will appear in Avengers 4.

When Entertainment Tonight conducted their own set interview with the Russos, however, Joe listed Captain Marvel among the prominent female characters in the film while they were on the subject of Avengers: Infinity War. You can see that exchange in the video below.

The subject of the interview was Avengers: Infinity War, but Joe Russo could have simply been grouping both Avengers films together when he said “in this.” That’s what Disney is effectively saying, as they told Slashfilm that Captain Marvel is not in Infinity War.

Given that Joe Russo told another group of reporters that Captain Marvel is in Avengers 4, but not in Infinity War right around the same time, I’m inclined to believe he simply misspoke or forgot to differentiate between the next two Avengers films in the Entertainment Tonight interview.

Captain Marvel could certainly appear in Avengers: Infinity War. She could make a surprise appearance near the end, or show up in a post-credits scene to promote her solo movie next year. It is unlikely, however, that the character will have a featured role in Infinity War. And, of course, she may not appear at all.
