Where’s Hawkeye?

That question has been asked again and again as Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) has remained absent from most of the marketing and promotional material from Avengers: Infinity War. If it weren’t for set photos and Renner’s own social media posts, you’d start to doubt that he’s even in the next two Avengers movies.

He’s going to be there, but perhaps the reason we are not seeing him is because his path has not intersected with his fellow Avengers in the scenes we’ve been shown. Hawkeye could be walking alone for now, based on what directors Joe and Anthony Russo told reporters on a set visit last June.

JOE RUSSO: Coming out of Civil War, [Hawkeye is] in the same position that Cap and Falcon are at the end of that movie. And Ant-Man. And coming into this movie you know … the characters on Cap’s side coming out of the Civil War, some made certain decisions and others made other decisions that led to different paths in them dealing with oversight in this movie in a different way. So Hawkeye’s on his own journey in this movie.

ANTHONY RUSSO: Yeah. He has a unique reaction to the Civil War situation that puts him in a special spot in this film.

Remember that Barton has a wife and kids to think about. Every Avenger has family in some form, but no one has the full suite of domestic responsibilities for which Barton must account. That has to weigh on him and affect his decisions after Captain America: Civil War.

It is inevitable, though, that Hawkeye will cross paths with The Avengers again. He’ll need them to protect his family, along with the rest of the world, from Thanos and, as surprising as it may be to some, The Avengers are going to need him.
