Black Panther has done it. The 18th Marvel Studios film has earned over $1 billion at the global box office. Until now, no standalone superhero franchise had ever made $1 billion with its very first film. Just add that to the list of the many firsts and records Black Panther has claimed.
The list of billion-dollar movies based on superheroes is still fairly short. Marvel Studios now has five of them as Black Panther joins The Avengers ($1.52B), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($1.41B), Iron Man 3 ($1.22B), and Captain America: Civil War ($1.15B).
There are two others from Warner Bros. and DC: The Dark Knight ($1B) and The Dark Knight Rises ($1.08B).
All of the previous members of the billion-dollar superhero club are sequels or team-up films. Black Panther is the only rookie effort and the film just opened in China this weekend. It remains on a lightning pace domestically, passing The Dark Knight today as the highest-grossing standalone superhero movie in North America.
It still has a chance to wind up as the highest-grossing superhero movie of all time worldwide. It should at least be able to pass Iron Man 3 as the highest-grossing standalone superhero movie at the global box office.
