Black Panther is an unstoppable force at the box office. Marvel Studios’ latest has once again leapt over its already lofty opening weekend estimates. Thanks to the second best Sunday of any movie ever released in North America ($60.1M), Black Panther is now just the second superhero movie ever to earn over $200M in its first three days.
The most recent industry projections have Black Panther bringing in $201.8M through Sunday. The film’s momentum will on today, President’s Day, for a four-day of $235M.
Black Panther may have fallen short of The Avengers‘ ($207.4M) record for the best three-day opening in superhero movie history, but it will break The Avengers‘ ($226.3M) record for the best four-day opening in the genre.
Black Panther came very close to having the best Sunday in box office history. Its $60.1M Sunday was just shy of Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘ $60.5M Sunday back in December 2015.
Audiences have embraced Black Panther in a big way, allowing the film to make a habit of beating every box office projection put in front of it. Its three-day opening is the fifth best in domestic box office history and moviegoers gave the film just the second “A+” CinemaScore for a live-action superhero movie.
This is not a sequel, or a team-up of characters with their own franchises. This is the first Black Panther movie. It is a standalone franchise debut, yet Black Panther has managed to open stronger than any solo superhero movie ever, besting the likes of Batman, Iron Man, and Spider-Man. Never mind superheroes, Black Panther has the best standalone franchise debut regardless of genre.
Simply put, this is incredible.
