Black Panther had one of the best first days of any superhero movie in history. The 18th Marvel Studios film earned $75.8M on Friday, the third best opening day in studio history.
This keeps Black Panther on pace for a 3-day opening weekend over $185M and a 4-day total well over $200M.
Black Panther‘s first day trails only Avengers: Age of Ultron ($84.4M) and The Avengers ($80.8M) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Overall, Black Panther had the fourth best opening day of any superhero movie, also trailing Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($81.6M).
All of the superhero movies ahead of Black Panther have one thing in common: they’re all team-ups of multiple heroes with their own movie franchises. That means Black Panther just had the best opening day of any standalone superhero movie, just ahead of The Dark Knight Rises ($175.75M).
Last night, Black Panther received just the second “A+” CinemaScore in live-action superhero movie history. That word-of-mouth could lead to an even bigger performance on Saturday and Sunday than current industry projections.
