Thor: Ragnarok arrives on Digital HD and 4K UHD on February 20. We’re close enough now to start seeing clips of the various special features including deleted scenes. One of those scenes was released today and it changes the fate of a major character.

In the final cut of Ragnarok, Odin passes away peacefully in the first act of the film. In a deleted scene released exclusively to Entertainment Weekly, however, Odin’s death does not seem peaceful at all.

Thor (Chris Hemsworth) says his father was murdered right in front of him by Thor’s sister, Hela (Cate Blanchett). In the film, Hela does not appear until after Odin has already died. She couldn’t, as Odin was the one using his power to imprison her in another dimension.

It could be argued that using so much of his strength to hold Hela back was the primary cause of Odin’s death and so she effectively “killed” him, but that still does not sound like murder. We also know that Hela’s arrival scene was changed from the first teaser to the final film.

Hela originally arrived and destroyed Thor’s hammer in a New York alley, not in Norway. It seems the location is not all that changed, as the original version of the scene probably had Hela arriving before Odin’s death. Odin was likely too weak to continue holding her back, giving Hela the opportunity to murder the Allfather with her own two hands.

Hopefully we will get to see this alternate version of Hela’s arrival as another deleted scene on the Thor: Raganarok home release (the Blu-ray will arrive a couple weeks after the Digital release on March 6).
