The Marvel Studios 10th anniversary class photo featured dozens of stars from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fans loved it, obviously, but also noticed a few key faces that weren’t in the photo. One of the most frequent questions being asked was “Where’s Coulson?”

Clark Gregg played Agent Phil Coulson in four of Marvel Studios’ six Phase One movies. He was the one who introduced us to S.H.I.E.L.D. in the very first MCU film, Iron Man. Coulson and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) were the thread that stitched together those early Marvel movies to help the shared universe take shape.

Gregg was obviously invited to take part in the photo, but he could not make it because of a commitment to the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. television series that same day. The class photo was taken in Atlanta on Saturday, October 7. On that day, Gregg was participating in a New York Comic Con panel or Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., so he was unable to be in Atlanta.

Atlanta is only a few hours from New York by air, but the class photo probably took hours and Gregg’s NYCC panel was right in the middle of the day at 2:00pm. NYCC isn’t a big deal for Marvel Studios, as they usually skip it, but Marvel Television is always there and that panel was where the first footage of the fifth season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was shown.

Still, I wish Gregg had been able to skip the panel to be in this photo, as I’m sure his castmates could have carried on in his absence and the fans there would have understood in the end. For all we know, however, Gregg had the option to be in Atlanta and chose to be at NYCC instead, which is completely understandable.
