For the first time ever, a superhero movie has been nominated for the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar® and that film is Logan! Scott Frank, James Mangold (who directed the film), and Michael Green were nominated for their screenplay this morning.

This is an incredible achievement for Logan. Movies based on superhero comics have always been overlooked in the Best Adapted Screenplay category. Not even The Dark Knight, which was nominated for eight Academy Awards, was recognized for its screenplay.

There were once again no superhero movies nominated in the Best Picture category, but the screenplay nomination for Logan is the biggest step toward the genre being recognized in the  biggest Oscar® category since The Dark Knight was snubbed in 2008, causing the Academy to expand the field from five to as many as ten nominees.

The 90th Oscars® will be held on Sunday, March 4.
