Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has been nominated for an Academy Award! The James Gunn film officially received an Oscar® nomination this morning for Achievement in Visual Effects. This is the tenth Oscar nomination for Marvel Studios as they near the tenth anniversary of releasing their very first film.

Visual effects supervisor Christopher Townsend, Guy Williams, visual effects supervisor (Framestore) Jonathan Fawkner, and special effects supervisor Dan Sudick were all recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for their work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

This is the third Oscar® nomination for the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. The first film was nominated in the same category three years ago, as well as Best Makeup and Hairstyling. GotG Vol. 2 was a finalist in the latter category, but ultimately snubbed (and yes, it was snubbed).

Marvel Studios now has 10 Oscar® nominations between the 17 films they have released thus far. Eight of those nominations have been for Best Visual Effects with the other two being Guardians of the Galaxy‘s aforementioned Best Makeup and Hairstyling nomination and a Best Sound Editing nom for Iron Man.

Today’s Oscar® nomination for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is the cherry on top of the best year ever for the studio. Marvel Studios released three films in 2017 (GotG Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Thor: Ragnarok, all of which grossed over $850 million worldwide while receiving overwhelmingly positive responses from critics and audiences.

Congratulations to the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 visual effects team! The Oscars® will be handed out at the 90th Academy Awards on Sunday, March 4.
