Samuel L. Jackson and Cobie Smulders are not spending their Sunday watching football. The two were spotted on a Marvel set in Atlanta playing their respective roles of Nick Fury and Maria Hill. That much is clear, but we do not know which upcoming Marvel Studios feature they are making.
The obvious answer is Avengers 4, but that film wrapped in Atlanta 10 days ago. This could still be a pickup, however, as wrap celebrations often happen a bit before principal photography is truly complete.
The other option would be Captain Marvel. Production hasn’t officially started yet, and it will actually take place in California, but that doesn’t mean Marvel Studios won’t knock out a scene or two early. Photos from the set show Jackson with and without Fury’s iconic eyepatch.
Even when the eyepatch isn’t on, there is a scar on Jackson’s face, so whatever was being filmed today likely takes place after Fury’s injury. Captain Marvel is set in the 1990s, before the last time Fury trusted someone and lost an eye. Also, the Marvel Cinematic Universe iteration of Maria Hill would not have been old enough to be in S.H.I.E.L.D. in the ’90s.
This could still be a scene from Captain Marvel, though, if the movie flashes forward to Carol Danvers’ (Brie Larson) return to Earth. We’re assuming she’s been off in space, or maybe lost in time, for the better part of two decades given that she hasn’t been around to assist The Avengers in preventing world-ending disasters.
And lastly, this could be additional photography or a reshoot for Avengers: Infinity War.
Avengers: Infinity War is in theaters May 4, 2018 with Captain Marvel arriving on March 8, 2019, followed by Avengers 4 on May 3, 2019.
