Here is your big Marvel rumor of the day. Spider-Man, the Marvel Cinematic Universe iteration played by Tom Holland, could be appearing in Sony’s Venom. I’m as surprised as you are.

The scoop, which should be accompanied with a serving of salt, comes from Collider Video‘s Jon Schnepp. He reported the rumor on today’s episode of Collider Movie Talk.

“I’m gonna say it right here on this show, Spider-Man is gonna be in Venom. For the last couple months, we’ve been talking about Venom, we’ve been hearing about how Sony’s keeping it all separated. Spider-Man’s in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but every other character that’s in the Spider-Man universe is separate.”

Schnepp clarified that he is in fact talking about Tom Holland’s Spider-Man when asked if it was a cameo.

“Like a cameo, like a who-knows-what-eo. All I’m saying is, hey man, Spider-Man, and I’m talking about Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, is gonna be in Venom.”

This is one hell of a scoop, should Schnepp prove to be right. After producer Amy Pascal said Venom and other properties were part of the same universe as Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, and therefore part of the MCU, last summer, both she and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige walked those comments back. The official stance has been that Venom and Sony’s upcoming Silver and Black are not MCU canon.

Keep in mind that Sony does not actually need Marvel Studios’ permission to use Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in Venom or any other movie. They can do what they want with the character, though going against Marvel’s wishes could obviously impact any future dealings with the studio.

Schnepp’s report is the first I’ve heard of anything close to this rumor. I’m eager to see if any other outlets have heard the same whispers, and also what Feige will say when he’s next in front of reporters at the upcoming Black Panther junket.
