Black Panther tickets went on sale Monday and the next Marvel Studios feature is headed for a very big opening. The film sold more advanced tickets in its first 24 hours than any previous Marvel Studios movie. Captain America: Civil War, which opened at $179.1 million domestic in May 2016, was the previous record holder.

There is no consistent correlation between advanced ticket sales and opening weekend box office records. Black Panther is not guaranteed a higher opening weekend than Captain America: Civil War, nor should it be considered a disappointment if it doesn’t top $179M in its first three days. As a brand new franchise, any opening north of $100M should be considered a massive success.

The biggest domestic opening weekend for any first film in a solo franchise by Marvel Studios is 2008’s Iron Man with $98.6M.

The powerful first day in advanced ticket sales is a terrific sign for Black Panther‘s box office performance, regardless of what records it does or does not eventually set. Interest is obviously very high in the film and if the movie is as good as it looks, strong reviews from critics will only add to the film’s momentum heading into its opening frame.

Black Panther steps into the spotlight (and theaters) February 16.
