Michael Peña was the secret weapon in 2015’s Ant-Man. His Luis stole scenes just as easily as he could steal two smoothie machines. Luis is also quite the storyteller, which is why Marvel fans are so happy to see him return in Ant-Man and the Wasp.
While promoting his new film, 12 Strong, Peña spoke with IGN about his role in the sequel. Things are a little different now with Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) being an international fugitive, but the former cellmates are still best buds. Happy to be one of “the good guys,” Luis also seems to be moving away from a life of crime.
“I can’t really say because I guess they’re good buddies, they’ve always been good buddies and I think they’re remaining good buddies. I’ve got to be very vague, very general, but I guess he’s following more of the American dream and trying to better himself. He loves that universe and everybody knows Tony Stark and those guys. I guess he’s just trying to make his life better. I think that’s the best way to say it.”
Peña is not the only member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 12 Strong, as it also stars Chris Hemsworth. The two actors had never met prior to their first day on set together, but Marvel was an immediate point of conversation.
“We talked about it on the first day. It’s a whole different kind of club to be in, the Marvel Universe. I don’t know if they’ll use me for the third movie, I still really don’t know. It’s cool to make a little bit of a mark on that Marvel Universe and it’s kind of a cool club, they run a really cool studio.”
Peña mentioning a third movie in the Ant-Man franchise is exciting, but it should not be taken as confirmation that a third film is coming. He might just be assuming a third film since most Marvel Studios franchises have gotten one. It’s a fairly safe assumption so long as Ant-Man and the Wasp performs as well as most expect it to at the box office.
As for Luis popping up in other movies, like a reunion with Hemsworth in the Thor franchise, Peña did not put in a request with The God of Thunder.
“I didn’t but I should have so maybe I should say something? I’ve never worked with anyone else from the Marvel Universe. I’ve just worked with Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly and Michael Douglas which is a pretty cool list.”
They really don’t even have to make an entire movie. Just imagine a short video of Luis telling Scott all about a cosmic adventure with Thor. Of course, Luis would be entirely welcome in any full-length feature with Thor, as far as I’m concerned.
Ant-Man and the Wasp is in theaters July 6.
