Earlier today, news broke that She’s Gotta Have It star DeWanda Wise was joining Captain Marvel. Now it’s official, though not by a press release from Marvel Studios or Disney. Captain Marvel herself, Brie Larson, has confirmed the report.

There is still no word on what role DeWanda Wise is playing, other than she will be a supporting character. Fans have already begun speculating, however, that Wise will bring Monica Rambeau into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Introduced in Amazing Spider-Man Annual #16 in 1982, Rambeau was originally called Captain Marvel in her own right. Rambeau has had a few superhero identities with Spectrum being her most recent. She has super powers, including the ability to transform herself into electromagnetic energy, and has fought alongside The Avengers against some of their most dangerous foes.
Rambeau has even fought against Thanos’ Black Order (“Children of Thanos” in the MCU) in Wakanda in a scene very similar to the one that blew everyone away in the Avengers: Infinity War trailer. Perhaps Carol Danvers (Larson) won’t be the only new super-powered ally for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
I know, I’m getting ahead of myself. We don’t know that Wise is Rambeau and even if she is, that does not mean she will have super powers (yet) in the MCU. Hopefully Marvel Studios will shed some light on Wise’s character in the inevitable start of production press release that should be coming within the next several weeks.
Captain Marvel arrives in theaters March 8, 2019.
