As Marvel Studios approaches the 10th anniversary of their first film (Iron Man), there will be plenty of reflection on how the Marvel Cinematic Universe came to be. There is no Marvel Cinematic Universe, however, without the Marvel Age of Comics, for which we can thank a select few, including the greatest cameo actor of all time, Stan Lee. Today is as good a day as any to show our appreciation to “The Man,” as it is his 95th birthday!
Stan Lee, as you well know, is the co-creator of several characters that not only populate the MCU, but have also made superhero movies the most dominant genre at the box office. Spider-Man, Iron Man, the Hulk, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, and many more can be counted among Lee’s co-creations. The same is true for characters that may soon (or within a few years at least) make their way into the MCU, like the Fantastic Four and the X-Men.
The impact that Stan Lee has made on Marvel and superhero storytelling cannot be overstated. As much as he has meant to comics and all the other superhero media they’ve inspired, Lee has been just as invaluable as an ambassador for all of it.
Whether it was reaching out to Marvel readers on Stan’s Soapbox, lecturing college students during special campus appearances, welcoming kids to Marvel-inspired animation as a narrator, or popping up alongside his co-creations in major blockbusters, Stan Lee is the consummate showman, inviting all to experience the wonder and excitement of superhero stories.
There is no one more popular at a Marvel Studios red carpet premiere than Lee. Sure, photographers may snap more pictures of the lead actors than Lee, but Lee is the man every single one of those actors wants to talk to. That same feeling can be found in Marvel fans all around the world, as Lee’s cameos are always good for a pop from the crowd.
Please join us in wishing Stan Lee the happiest of birthdays, and many more!
