Marvel Studios has a contender. A day after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 advanced to the next round of the visual effects Oscar® race, we now learn that the film remains in contention for makeup and hairstyling. The James Gunn film is in competition with six other movies to be listed as a final nominee and, potentially, the eventual winner.

The first Guardians of the Galaxy was also nominated for makeup and hairstyling in 2014. The film lost to The Grand Budapest Hotel and GotG Vol. 2 may also have to hope for the honor of just being nominated while not taking home the gold, as the competition is fierce. Here is the full list of potential nominees:

Darkest Hour
Ghost in the Shell
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
I, Tonya
Victoria & Abdul

Marvel Studios can hope for a comic book movie repeat, as DC’s Suicide Squad took home the Oscar® in the same category last year, but that may have been the exception that proves the rule. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences often favors transformations of actors into real people, giving an edge to films like I, Tonya and the presumed favorite in the category, Darkest Hour, which offers a startling transformation of Gary Oldman into Winston Churchill.

Still, there is no need to count Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 out just yet. The film does offer a wide array of incredible makeup and hairstyling, bringing to life characters from all over the galaxy. Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Yondu (Michael Rooker), and Nebula (Karen Gillan) look no less impressive than they did three years ago, but new characters like Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki), her Sovereign, and Taserface (Chris Sullivan) might be enough to put this Guardians film over the top.

The final list of Oscar® nominees will be announced on January 23, and the awards ceremony will take place on March 4.
