For the past several weeks, many have wondered what Disney’s now officially announced purchase of Fox would mean for R-rated Marvel movies like Deadpool. The assumption has been that Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) and others would head for PG-13 pastures, but that may not ultimately be the case.
In a conference call with investors, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed that more Deadpool is on the way and R-rated Marvel movies are not off the table.
“It [Deadpool] clearly has been and will be Marvel branded. But we think there might be an opportunity for a Marvel-R brand for something like Deadpool. As long as we let the audiences know what’s coming, we think we can manage that fine.”
Saying “there may be an opportunity” is not a commitment, but at least Iger is saying there’s a chance. The Deadpool franchise does not have to be R-rated in order to remain relevant, but Disney should not be too quick to eliminate possibilities for any of the new properties the company picked up today.
