21st Century Fox is ready to sell and it appears Disney will indeed be buying. With Comcast formally acknowledging and dropping out of the bidding yesterday, CNBC reports that Disney and Fox are now on a “glide path” to making their mega-deal official. The two companies are expected to make an announcement this Thursday, December 14.
Disney is expected to purchase most of 21st Century Fox’s assets including the film and television studios. Consequently, Disney-owned Marvel Studios will be picking up the rights to X-Men and related franchises like Deadpool. There is some question as to whether or not Fantastic Four will be part of the deal, as Slashfilm reports that Constantin Films may still hold rights that they’ve been sharing with Fox.
My guess is Fantastic Four ultimately goes to Disney since Constantin Film has no distribution without Fox as a movie studio, but that may take some time to sort out. Hopefully not too long, though, as it would be nice to see Marvel’s First Family and some of their amazing villains like Doctor Doom and Galactus in the Marvel Cinematic Universe sooner than later.
