Hugh Jackman really is done playing Wolverine. He ended his 17-year run with the extraordinary Logan earlier this year. Disney’s potential purchase of Fox’s movie studio, among other assets isn’t going to change that.
The actor recently spoke with Collider about the Disney/Fox deal and whether or not it would lure him back to the claws. Jackman sees an exciting opportunity, but not necessarily for himself.
“It’s interesting because for the whole 17 years I kept thinking that’d be so great, like I would love to see, particularly, Iron Man or the Hulk and Wolverine together. And every time I saw an Avengers movie I could just see Wolverine in the middle of of them like punching them all on the head. But it was like, ‘Oh well, that’s not gonna happen,’ and it was interesting just when I first saw that headline. It was just the possibility of it and who knows what’s gonna happen? I was like, ‘Hang on!’ But I think, unfortunately, the ship has sailed for me, but for someone else I would like to see Wolverine in there.”
It doesn’t sound like Jackman is completely against returning to the role. He has said before that being in the MCU might be the only thing that would bring him back.
Still, fans should probably be like Hugh Jackman and prepare themselves to see someone else as Wolverine in the MCU. If Marvel Studios really does get the X-Men franchise via Disney’s purchase of Fox, then the most likely scenario is that the franchise will be rebooted. That does not have to mean origin stories all over again, but Marvel Studios will probably want their own X-Men just as they have their own Spider-Man.
That news may disappoint some who’ve dreamed of Jackman across from Robert Downey, Jr. or Chris Evans, but few ever get the chance to go out on top the way Jackman did with Logan. There’s nothing disappointing about that movie as a swan song.
