Marvel Studios has enjoyed their greatest year in 2017. The studio released three films, all of which have grossed over $800 million worldwide while enjoying praise from critics and general audiences. Marvel Studios does not need anything else to validate their success this year, but a little Oscar® gold would not hurt and the studio officially has three contenders in the visual effects race.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Thor: Ragnarok are all on the shortlist for the Best Visual Effects Oscar®. The list includes 20 films that will eventually be whittled down to five nominees. It is unlikely that all three Marvel Studios movies will make the final cut when there are other strong contenders like War for the Planet of the ApesDunkirkThe Shape of Water, and Blade Runner 2049 (among others) to consider.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 probably has the best chance of making the final cut, but I wouldn’t count out a second Marvel movie also making the list. It’s not likely, but possible. The Guardians franchise was nominated for Best Visual Effects on its first film in 2014 and should be able to pick up another one. That would be an honor in and of itself, but we’ll have to see if GotG Vol. 2 can win Marvel Studios their first Oscar®.

Here are the 20 films on the shortlist.

Alien: Covenant
Beauty and the Beast
Blade Runner 2049
Ghost in the Shell
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle
Justice League
Kong: Skull Island
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales
The Shape of Water
Spider-Man Homecoming
Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Thor: Ragnarok
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets
War for the Planet of the Apes
Wonder Woman
