Marvel Studios made a big splash with Ant-Man and the Wasp casting announcements this year, including Laurence Fishburne as Dr. Bill Foster. Fans were surprised to learn that Perry White of the DC Films Universe was headed to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For Fishburne, joining Marvel is a dream come true, as he told Yahoo.
“I was a comic book reader when I was a kid. I was mostly a Marvel guy, but I also loved the DC comics. I also loved the DC universe. I bought comics from both universes. And then subsequently bought comics from other labels — Vertigo and Dark Horse.
“I’ve been watching Marvel movies for a long time and I’ve imagined and dreamt and fantasized that one day I’d be lucky enough to be in the Marvel Universe and that day has come.”
While discussing his love for superheroes and all things Marvel, Fishburne may have let a potential spoiler slip out. He initially confirmed, then corrected the interviewer’s suggestion that Fishburne is now a superhero in the MCU.
“I am! Actually, I’m playing a scientist. Shh. Shh.”
Based on the video, it really does look and sound like Fishburne was confirming that we will see him as a superhero, probably in Ant-Man and the Wasp, or perhaps in a future film. He is clearly looking off to the side after saying “Shh,” with his eyes likely focused on his publicist. Whoops!
In the comics, Dr. Bill Foster has had multiple superhero identities, all of which involve getting really big (Black Goliath, Giant-Man, and Goliath). We know that rapid growth is in play in the MCU after watching Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) do it in Captain America: Civil War last year. It is possible Dr. Foster will follow suit.
Ant-Man and the Wasp is in theaters July 6, 2018.
