The moment fans learned Jeff Goldblum was cast as Grandmaster in Thor: Ragnarok was the same moment they wondered when Goldblum would appear alongside Benicio del Toro’s Collector in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Both characters are brothers in the comics, so it should only be a matter of time before that sibling rivalry plays out on the big screen.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige isn’t ready to confirm when we will see that family reunion, but he was very optimistic it would happen in an interview with Fandango.
“It would be awesome man. It would be great. We love the idea that they’re brothers. If you go on the Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout attraction at California Adventure in Anaheim, you will see a picture on Collector’s wall of he and the Grandmaster playing some sort of a space chess game, which right now is the only place you can see the two of them in a frame together, but let’s hope that changes someday.”
Feige is referring to the painting by Marvel Studios Head of Visual Development Ryan Meinerding (shown above). The Collector hasn’t been seen in the MCU since Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014, but he does hold an Infinity Stone (the Aether/Reality Stone from Thor: The Dark World). With Thanos (Josh Brolin) on the hunt for all the Stones, The Collector seems likely to appear in Avengers: Infinity War or Untitled Avengers.
Perhaps The Grandmaster will be visiting his dear brother when The Mad Titan comes knocking. It could be quite the bonding experience for the two brothers. In the comics, The Grandmaster lost the Mind Stone to Thanos, so if that was also the case in the MCU (remember that Thanos had the Mind Stone and gave it to Loki inside the sceptre in The Avengers), Goldblum’s character will know exactly what The Collector is going through.
If they’re still alive, they can share sob stories over a game of space chess.
You can see Jeff Goldblum as The Grandmaster in Thor: Ragnarok, in theaters this Friday, November 3.
