Captain Marvel is getting ready to start production early next year. Casting news is going to be breaking periodically, beginning today with a Variety report that Ben Mendelsohn is up for a villain role in the film.

Mendelsohn is no stranger to villain roles, having played one in The Dark Knight Rises and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, among other films. There is, however, a more powerful force at play here than typecasting. Captain Marvel would reunite Mendelsohn with his Mississippi Grind directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck.

Mendelsohn‘s villain is thought to be a leader of the Skrulls, given that the presence of the shapeshifiting alien baddies was confirmed at Comic Con earlier this year. The Kree/Skrull War was also mentioned by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, so perhaps that opens the door for the Kree Supreme Intelligence. A Skrull leader is still the most likely call, but one more alternative would be Yon-Rogg, the antagonist involved in Captain Marvel getting her powers in the comics.

If he signs, Mendelsohn will join a cast that already includes Brie Larson in the title role and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, this time with both eyes since the film takes place in the 1990s.

Captain Marvel is in theaters March 8, 2019.
