The new issue of Empire hits stands this week and Thor: Ragnarok is the eight-page cover story. The magazine will offer dueling Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) covers, teasing their upcoming rematch. Empire has released a few advanced details from the article, most of which pertain to the new look and feel of the series, plus a few ringing endorsements of director Taika Waititi.

Thor: Ragnarok is Chris Hemsworth’s fifth turn as The God of Thunder and he credited Waititi for freshening up the franchise just when things might have otherwise gotten stale.

“[It’s] not feeling so otherworldly, with more of a contemporary personality and sense of humour. Anything that felt Shakespearean, Taika just said, ‘Come on, we’ve done that. He doesn’t talk like that anymore.’ There’s a lot of ad lib in this, which there was never really room for before. It’s probably the most fun I’ve had on a Marvel film.”

Tom Hiddleston, who returns as Loki, was similarly impressed by the director while pointing out that offering a new take on the characters won’t result in audiences losing a sense of who they are.

“Taika’s been so respectful to the mythology. But he’s injected so much humour into it. He’s given every character truly laugh-out-loud moments without betraying their integrity.”

Marvel Cinematic Universe newcomer Jeff Goldblum, who plays The Grandmaster, is perhaps the most enamored with Waititi.

“I fell in love with him immediately. He’sa loosey-goosey improvisational grandmaster himself, so we hit it off. He’s a wonderful and stylish and deeply handsome director. I think he’s going to do something special with this.”

The new issue of Empire will be out later this week. For now, enjoy the covers and new images featuring Thor, Loki, and The Grandmaster in the gallery below.
