Nathan Fillion really did have cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but it never made it out of the edit bay alive. Those who kept an eye on spy photos from the set were in the know, but now director James Gunn has enlightened everyone. Nathan Fillion was Simon Williams, a.k.a. Wonder Man, in poster form.
As fans saw in the film, part of the story takes place in St. Charles, Missouri. One part of that sequence, which was filmed but not shown, featured a movie theater hosting a Simon Williams film festival. The theater was adorned with one-sheets from Williams’ filmography including a Tony Stark biopic. Gunn shared that poster and details from the cameo on his Facebook page.
Simon Williams really is a superhero in the Marvel Comics universe and an Avenger. Wonder Man is his superhero identity, but he also assumes many others as a working actor in Hollywood. Fillion is a perfect choice for the role and it’s cool that Gunn tried to get introduce Fillion as a character that really could have a future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Here’s hoping that the idea of Nathan Fillion as Simon Williams finds new life elsewhere in the MCU. Williams is a really fun character with his own big screen potential. Gunn is certainly going to try his best, as he’s set to release more Simon Williams one-sheets in the coming days. Perhaps Gunn will find room to introduce Fillion as Williams in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 or another Marvel Studios film since Gunn will be helping studio boss Kevin Feige on more than just Guardians in the future.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is in theaters now. No word yet on when Iain McFayden’s Tony Stark will be available on Blu-ray and Digital HD.
