It’s opening day for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and writer/director James Gunn is spending it the same way he spent opening day for the first film back on August 1, 2014. While fans spend their afternoon and evening at the movies, Gunn is hard at work writing the next installment of the franchise, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Disney and Marvel Studios must be thrilled after seeing Vol. 2 haul in $17 million in its domestic opening last night.

We don’t know exactly how far Gunn is into his writing process, but it’s probably a little early for him to be putting together the first full draft of the script. He’s more likely working on the same kind of hyper-detailed treatment he did for the first two films. Busy as he may be today, Gunn took a moment to thank the fans before sharing what he’s up to.

Hopefully Gunn will take a little bit of time off for some well-earned rest and relaxation. The fact that he’s already working on Vol. 3, though, is a testament to how much Gunn loves these characters and how difficult (or impossible) it is for him to stay away from them for too long. Fortunately for us, this means we’re probably on schedule to see Vol. 3 in 2020, just as we thought.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is in theaters now.
