Welcome to another edition of as the Gauntlet turns. After Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige previously said that the title of Avengers 4 was being withheld because it was a spoiler, Zoe Saldana seemed to inadvertently reveal the title was Avengers: Infinity Gauntlet at the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 European premiere yesterday. Today, GotG Vol. 2 writer/director James Gunn is telling Yahoo! that Saldana misspoke.
“[Avengers: Infinity Gauntlet] is not the title. I will say that my guess is that Zoe just [misspoke]. I’ll talk to Zoe today, but I would imagine that that is just Zoe misspeaking, saying Infinity Gauntlet instead of Infinity War.”
Avengers: Infinity War, of course, precedes Avengers 4 (Infinity Gauntlet?) by a year. Saldana did not seem to mistake one film title for another yesterday, as she was actually making a distinction in the Guardians’ shooting schedules for the third and fourth Avengers films.
“We’re in the middle of it. I think that the Guardians just shot their part when it comes to [Infinity War], like the first part. And we all have to go back for Gauntlet later this year.”
It is still possible that Saldana misspoke. She might have just thrown Infinity Gauntlet out there as a title because of a production nickname, or simply echoed some of the online chatter about potential titles for Avengers 4.
It’s important to note that James Gunn has frequently told fans that while he will keep secrets about his films, he will not lie about them. He’s not directing the next two Avengers films, but he is producing them, so his very direct statement that Infinity Gauntlet is not the title of Avengers 4 is a strong indication that the real title of the film remains a mystery to all of us.
